Here is a poem, a Sicilian Sonnet, that I wrote for my son.

My Son
by Shellyne Urban

As the nurse lay your tiny body on
my stomach, all pain disappeared with haste.
I saw your hands first, large for such a small
person.  My arms trembled as I embraced
you and held you next to my heart. Upon
your face my tears fell, full of love, I placed
a kiss on your cheek and said you’re the one
that I will live for. We were interlaced.
Twenty-one years later and I am here,
watching, loving, and so proud of the man
in front of me. With my heart on my sleeve,
as the saying goes, it’s hard to believe,
so I stand back and watch you go, a plan

for your life away, to live out your dreams.
This is a poem I wrote for my husband, the form is Ballade Supreme.

I Fall
by Shellyne Urban

While tree branches bear cold nights, winter’s kiss
has me longing for the warmth of my love.
We nudge closer and talk of the promise
that we made to hold each other above
all others. The kids need attention, so
do the dogs, house needs paint, lawns need a mow.
The frigid air keeps us from these tasks, though,
and we stay inside in our warm thermals
to thaw our hearts and escape the snow.
Winter’s cold but our love is eternal.

Blossoms appear with pink, joyful tulips.
Baseball players on the field hold their gloves,
run, and swing the bat, trying not to miss.
We watch our boys, eyes wet with tears of love
streaming down our faces, cheering above
the rest as loud as we can so they know
we are here. We are always here. They show
us a smile, we joke that they look so tall.
We wonder out loud, where does the time go?
Spring is sweet and our love is eternal.

School’s out! Our girls are at the beach in flip
flops and suits we don’t want to see because
they are still our babies.  We reminisce,
in the hot sun, squinting and in awe of
the bond we share, an overwhelming love
for what we have together. Kids have grown,
two of them moved out to be on their own.
A warm night shared outside and we recall
that we are still kids at heart. And we know,
Summer’s bright and our love is eternal.

If I had one season to call my own,
it’s autumn! But don’t fear to be alone,
I am more in love with you every fall.
Each season makes us stronger, for you know,

Seasons change but our love is eternal.
Mountain Home
by Shellyne Urban

The smell of pine and the ocean brings back
memories of life under the redwoods trees.
Spirals of smoke from wood stoves rise in black
night air while winds howl branches sway with ease.
I miss the fog creeping over your crest
as it slowly cleared for warm sunny days.
Wild blackberry plants lined our road and lest
you feel forgotten, I am here to gaze.
As the path curves and climbs into your soul
I grasp the bar, knowing you are a beast.
Three generations made you their home.
Just me left to look at your majesty.
I am a mountain girl, always will be.

All I ever need is in front of me.

Santa Cruz Mountains at dusk.

I have fun decorating and baking cakes. I work full-time and go to college and have two adult kids who live at home so I do not have a lot of time to do it, but I do enjoy it.  Here are some cakes I have made over the years.

This cake was for my sister-in-law's bridal shower. It was vanilla with a lemon zest butter cream and lemon curd filling.  She loves daisies!

A spice cake in the shape of a pumpkin for our annual pumpkin carving party.

A Mickey Mouse cake for my nephew Rylan's first birthday. I don't even remember what kind of cake it was! Probably vanilla and some chocolate in there somewhere.

My daughter helped me with all of the lady bugs on this cake. It was vanilla with a raspberry filling and vanilla buttercream under the fondant. The big lady bug was made with rice crispy treats and covered with fondant. This was for my cousin's daughter's first birthday.

Wedding cakes with vanilla cake and raspberry filling. White chocolate wrap and fresh flowers. Beautiful cake for a beautiful autumn wedding.

For my cousin's lily pad themed baby shower.

A cake for my friend's baby shower welcoming her baby boy, Miles.

For my sister-in-law's baby shower - small cake and cupcakes.

For my same sister-in-law but different baby :) A Little Pumpkin themed baby shower.
